Unfortunate news to report this Tuesday morning. Richard Sherman, the former 49ers cornerback who is currently a free agent, has been arrested on a charge of “burglary domestic violence” according to multiple reports citing the King County (Washington) public records.

According to Joe Fann, formerly of NBC Sports, the incident is being investigated as a felony and Sherman has been denied bail.

The arrest record states that Sherman was booked in the King County Correctional Facility at 6:08 a.m. Regardless of where the case goes from here, this is a terrible turn of events for a player and a man who was widely revered in both the Seahawks and 49ers locker rooms, where he was an outspoken team captain.

Sherman played seven years in Seattle but maintained his residence (in the greater Seattle area) there in the offseason, which is where he was arrested. He played the last three years in Santa Clara before hitting free agency.

The NFLPA, of which Sherman is a vice president, has released the following statement:

UPDATE: According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a report from TMZ and other reports, Sherman is also being investigated in connection with a hit-and-run in which a car, registered to Sherman, hit a concrete barrier at a construction site in Redmond, Washington, before driving the vehicle off an exit and abandoning the car in a parking lot.

According to TMZ, when Sherman was arrested, he fought with police at his residence, which resulted in the employment of a police dog on Sherman.

UPDATE: According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, Washington State Police will recommend additional misdemeanor charges of Driving Under the Influence and hit-and-run.

This story will be updated with additional information as it comes in.
