Johnny Cueto can’t help smiling after first career stolen base

When it’s Día de Cueto you know you’re going to get a show, and today Johnny Cueto did something he’s never done in his entire career – steal a base.

The Giants started their week-and-a-half homestand by welcoming the Pittsburg Pirates and Cueto was missing bats per usual, but the Giants were only able to muster a bit of offense through the third before a Steven Duggar home run put the Giants back in striking distance.

A shaken Chad Kuhl then walked Cueto in the next at-bat.

Always an eccentric on the mount, Cueto was also having fun at first. Each of his leads came with a hand that reached towards the base, as if he was telling the Pirates, “I’m not off the base! You are!”

What happened next the Pirates definitely did not see coming, as Cueto broke for a stolen base and made it without a throw or slide. And of course the helmet came off immediately.

Cueto, rightfully so, was all smiles as he turned to face the batters box.
