Buster Posey leaves Giants game after taking foul ball off mask

Wednesday night’s game is going all sorts of wrong for the Giants. At the time of writing, the Giants trail the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning and have tallied just one hit, while starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani was forced out of the game in the third inning.

In much more concerning news, Buster Posey had to exit the game in the third inning after taking a foul ball off A.J. Pollock’s bat square on the front of his catcher’s mask. As pointed out by Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow, the force of the impact caused paint chips to fly off Posey’s mask, as you can see on the video.

Posey was removed from the game at the end of the inning and replaced by Curt Casali. The Giants don’t have any other active catchers available for Wednesday night’s game.

As of yet, the Giants have not provided an update on Posey’s status, but the obvious concern in this situation is that the impact could cause a concussion. He was placed on the 7-day concussion list once back in 2019, when the Giants had to call up Aramis Garcia.
