The 49ers needed another corner. They got another corner.

Kyle Shanahan said after Tuesday’s practice, the team’s first in pads, that it was likely they’d have to make a roster addition as the team’s cornerback depth thinned out. Dontae Johnson missed practice after departing Monday’s early with a foot injury, while Emmanuel Moseley remains on the Reserve/COVID-19 list along with Jaquiski Tartt and Jauan Jennings, and Tim Harris Jr. is expected to miss a few weeks with a groin injury. That left Ken Webster as the team’s starting corner opposite Jason Verrett.

San Francisco reportedly worked out three players in cornerbacks B.W. Webb, Lafayette Pitts and tight end Ben Koyack on Tuesday.

According to Webb’s agent, Sunny Shah, Webb will sign with the 49ers on a one-year deal.

He might not be a heralded signing, but the 49ers could have done worse. Webb, the 31-year-old, has been a mercenary of sorts, playing 80 NFL games for six different NFL teams over seven years. He’s never spent more than one full season with one team, but has 27 career pass breakups and 4 career interceptions.

The Arizona Cardinals signed Webb during training camp last year in August, but he was released six days later.
