Giants dominate Rockies behind Webb’s gem and near grand slam

There is a sizable slice of baseball fans on planet Earth who do not believe Major League pitchers should have to step up to the plate and swing the bat.

That slice, along with being utterly wrong, must have been punching the air in anger when Logan Webb made the play of the game Thursday night to propel the San Francisco Giants (74-41) to a 7-0 win over the lowly Colorado Rockies (51-64).

The Sacramento-area native stepped up to the plate with a slight 2-0 lead in the fourth inning with the bases juiced, All-Star Germán Márquez on the bump, and spanked a 94-MPH four seamer to deep right center, missing a grand slam by what looked like inches.

Two pitches later Lamont Wade Jr. stayed scorching hot and pushed his hit streak to seven games by blasting a ball 430 feet up over the high right-field wall.

That blast made the score 7-0, where it stayed for the rest of the surprisingly warm evening at Oracle.

Webb picked up the win, pushing his record to 6-3. He lasted six innings, throwing 91 pitches (59 for strikes) in the process. It’s been 11 starts since the righty has given up more than three earned runs, all the way back on May 5.

Curt Casali was another bright spot on the night. The veteran catcher scored the first run of the game when Alex Dickerson doubled him home in the second, and started the fourth-inning rally when he doubled Mike Yastrzemski home.

No Giant batter had multiple hits in the game, but seven of them had one.

With the win the Giants pushed their NL West lead to five games over the Los Angeles Dodgers, who lost earlier in Philadelphia.

These two teams continue their four-game series on Friday, first pitch at 6:45. Anthony DeSclafani is expected to start for the Giants, Austin Gomber for the Rocks.
