First Brandon Crawford, now Buster Posey?

That’s the report from Jon Heyman of MLB Network, who tweeted on Tuesday that the Giants intend to re-sign Posey, ideally to a multi-year extension.

San Francisco just cut the same type of deal with Crawford, a two-year deal agreement worth $32 million that will presumably keep the shortstop in the Bay for the remainder of his career.

It makes sense that the Giants would like to do the same with Posey, who after taking a year off is having a career season at the ripe age of 34. Posey’s .972 OPS is a career high, and would be considered the second highest mark in the National League if the catcher had enough at-bats to qualify.

Posey is owed $22 million next season on a club-option, one the team could terminate for $3 million. The odds of them doing so were low before the 2021 season started, and are now non-existent after Posey has regained the form that won him an MVP award in 2012.
