The 49ers cornerback issues got worse on Sunday.

Already down Jason Verrett for the remainder of the year, the 49ers lost starting nickelback K’Waun Williams for a few weeks with a calf strain in the loss to Green Bay. San Francisco added what they hope is his brief replacement on Tuesday, signing veteran nickleback Buster Skrine.

Skrine, 32, most recently played with the Bears in 2019-2020 appearing in 28 of 32 games. Like most players signed in the middle of the season, the metrics are not kind to Skrine, who has graded out as a mostly below average player since he was drafted by the Browns in 2011 (5th round). Skrine has played a lot of football, appearing in 151 games in 10 seasons.

The 49ers might also be without cornerback Josh Norman who sustained a disturbing injury to his lungs, one that caused him to spit up blood and spend the night in the hospital on Sunday. Astoundingly, Norman has not been ruled out for this Sunday’s matchup vs. Seattle.
