Brewers top setup man likely to miss postseason after he ‘punched a wall’

Talk about adding insult to injury.

One of the Milwaukee Brewers’ top relievers, 2019 NL Rookie of the Year Devin Williams, is likely to miss the remainder of the year thanks to a broken hand sustained when he drunkenly punched a wall on Sunday night. The incident concluded an evening of going out in celebration of the Brewers clinching the NL Central division title.

Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns told reporters Williams will undergo surgery to repair the fracture and that the injury will likely “keep him out for the remainder of the season.”

“I went out to have a few drinks and (at) my home I was a little frustrated, upset, and I punched a wall,” Williams told reporters. “That’s how it happened.

“I’m pretty upset with myself. There’s no one to blame but me. I feel like I’ve let the team down, the coaching staff, the fans, everyone. I know how big a role that I play on this team and there’s a lot of people counting on me.”

The injury is a huge blow to the Brewers, who now lose one of the best setup men in the game just a week before the postseason begins. Along with closer Josh Hader and Brad Boxberger, Williams has been a part of the most dominant late-game relief staff in MLB this season. The Brewers are are 70-4 when leading after seven innings.

Should the Giants end up facing the Brewers in the NLCS, their path to the World Series just got slightly easier.
