Atlanta broadcaster was unhappy with way Steph went for 50 vs. Hawks

Atlanta Hawks play-by-play announcer Bob Rathbun was in his feelings last night.

As he watched his beloved team get blasted in the second-half by the league-leading Warriors, Stephen Curry’s late floater with about four minutes left in the fourth quarter — a basket that gave Curry a 50-point night — seemed to put Rathbun over the edge.

“I mean, okay, he’s got 50. Is it really that big a deal?” Rathbun said sounding both frustrated and annoyed. “I mean you’ve won championships, you’ve won MVP, you’re going to the Hall of Fame, what’s the big deal about getting 48 or 50. I don’t get that.”

Color analyst Dominique Wilkins started to say that from a player’s perspective, he understood why Curry would want 50, before being cut off by Rathbun who complained that the Hawks were losing too badly to make the point chasing appropriate.

“As a player, I could see it,” Wilkins said.

“But you’re up by 22!” Rathbun interjected.

“Yes, you’re up by 20 before that shot,” Wilkins responded. “I mean it makes no difference. But I’ve seen that happen so many times.”

This is clearly a case of Rathbun just being annoyed that the Hawks — who have had a rough start to the season — got handled by the Warriors after leading in the first half.

Sorry Bob, there’s always next time.
