The 49ers are adding a big name to their coaching staff.

Following the departure of longtime quarterback coach Rich Scangarello who recently took a job as the offensive coordinator for the University of Kentucky, San Francisco is hiring Brian Griese — former NFL QB and Monday Night Football analyst — as his replacement, according to ESPN.

Griese, 46, was an NFL quarterback for 11 seasons from 1998-2008, making the Pro Bowl in 2000 with the Broncos after taking over for the retired John Elway in 1999. Griese played for Kyle Shanahan’s dad, Mike Shanahan, for his entire tenure in Denver (1998-2002).

Griese doesn’t have any coaching experience at the pro or collegiate level, and has worked as an analyst for ESPN since 2009. In 2020, Griese was promoted to the MNF booth. According to the New York Post, ESPN is looking to make wholesale changes to the MNF booth — one that also includes Steve Levy and Louis Riddick — this season.

Scangarello had served as the 49ers’ QB coach under Shanahan from 2017-18, and then again in 2021.
