Correction: “An original version of this story referred to Antoan Richardson as the Giants’ third base coach, but he coaches first base. KNBR regrets this error”

Giants first base coach Antoan Richardson explained to reporters why he got ejected from Tuesday night’s game, saying that he endured comments that “reeked undertones of racism” from an opposing coach.

Richardson, who is from the Bahamas, said Padres third base coach Mike Shildt was looking for Alex Wood in San Francisco’s dugout. Richardson wasn’t sure why Shildt was staring into SF’s bench area and asked if he could help Shildt — the former St. Louis Cardinals manager. Shildt then said “you need to control that motherfucker” a phrase Richardson presumed to be directed toward Giants manager Gabe Kapler.

Richardson responded by walking up the dugout steps and saying “excuse me,” he said. Umpire Greg Gibson then ejected him from the game for “instigating.”
