An eventful second day of the 2022 NFL Draft came to a close with the 49ers’ final selection. With the 105th overall pick the 49ers selected Southern Methodist University wide receiver Danny Gray.

If there is one thing Gray is known for at this point, it’s speed. He’s a fairly diminuitive receiver at 5’11”, 186 pounds, so he’ll likely need to gain weight, but he ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash which puts him in the 99th percentile of all receivers.

Gray started his career with a couple years at community college in Texas before transferring to SMU, where he had 803 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns last season. His range was believed to be in the fourth round, so this is slightly ahead of that, but not an absurd difference from where he was mocked.

Here’s what his highlight reel looks like:

With his selection, the 49ers used two of their third-round picks on a running back and speedy wide receiver, at a time when Deebo Samuel has had a tempestuous contract situation and discernibly does not want to be used as heavily as a running back, if at all.
