The 49ers reached the “who?” point of the draft by the third round, so at this point, we’re all rapidly researching and trying to catch up.

That’s not to insinuate these are bad picks, just totally unfamiliar ones. With Pick 187, the 49ers took Fordham offensive tackle Nick Zakelj.

He is a stubby-armed offensive line prospect with fairly encouraging athletic traits, which, at this point in the draft is generally worth swinging on.

Again, he’s an athlete:

At Fordham, he was a First Team All-Patriot for three-straight years and a First Team All-American in his fifth and final season. He said he wasn’t recruited and attended Fordham for the education, where he received his undergrad degree plus a masters in business analytics.

As has become a theme, especially, Zakelj was a Senior Bowl invitee. The 49ers have shown a propensity towards proven senior athletes, including the likes of Deebo Samuel, Javon Kinlaw, Jaylon Moore, Danny Gray and Zakelj, among others.

He took reps at guard at the Senior Bowl and said he feels like he’ll be more of a guard in the NFL.
