Bumgarner ejected for arguing with umpire after bizarre sticky-stuff check

Madison Bumgarner has started 2022 off in the right way for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In his first 22 innings of work, the former Giants ace only allowed three earned runs, good for a 1.17 ERA, second-best in MLB.

But things got a little weird Wednesday morning for Bumgarner.

After exchanging words with the home plate umpire following his first inning, Bumgarner received a very bizarre foreign substances check. It looked like first base umpire Dan Bellino was more intent on staring into Bumgarner’s soul than he was on checking Bumgarner’s hand for illicit substances.

Bumgarner did not take kindly to Bellino’s check, and started pointing and shouting at the umpire. He had to be held back by teammates and was tossed from the contest.
