The Giants had to make a tough decision on Saturday morning.

Mauricio Dubon, who spent his teenage years rooting for the club, was traded by San Francisco to the Houston Astros for catcher/first baseman Michael Papierski. As the Giants begin to get healthier, the club apparently determined that Dubon was the odd man out when it came to space on the roster.

The Giants acquired Dubon, 27, in 2019 in a deadline trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Honduras native looked like he might be a part of San Francisco’s future after an impressive showing during the shortened 2020 campaign (.274/.337/.389), but struggled to find consistency last season and at the beginning of 2022.

Dubon was out of minor league options and with the break out of Thairo Estrada, the return of Evan Longoira and the upcoming return of Tommy La Stella, the organization determined Dubon was no longer worth a roster spot.

Dubon moved to the states as a teenager to follow his baseball dream and lived in the Sacramento area, hoping to one day become a member of the Giants. Dubon thanked the organization for making his dream come true following news of the trade.

Papierski, 26, has yet to make his major league debut, but had impressive season in Triple-A last year posting an excellent .379 on-base percentage. He is considered a solid defensive catcher who can also play first base.
