Could the 2022 season be Evan Longoria’s last?
The 15-year MLB veteran is in the midst of a fairly impressive stretch, with three home runs and 6 RBI in the last five games and a hit in seven of the last eight games.
At age 36, and after some injury issues over the last few seasons, Longoria is coming up on the potential end of his time with the Giants. He has a $13 million team option after this season.
That all prompted the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser to ask Longoria about his future.
She joined Murph & Mac on Friday, relaying the conversation. While many players are cagey about the future, Slusser said Longoria was not, likening his situation to Buster Posey’s last year.
“He was pretty forthright. He’s considered maybe stepping back,” Slusser said. “He says whatever he does is going to have to make sense for him and his family. It sounds a lot like the kind of decisions Buster Posey was wrestling with last year…
He’s 36 and he’s had a very nice, long career, done a lot of really good things in the game. Sounds to me talking to Evan Longoria like he’d be very happy with what he’s accomplished if he does decide this is it and he’s certainly considering it.”
Some of the nexus for Longoria is the fact that his family are not with him in San Francisco.
“His family’s in Arizona,” Slusser said. “He’s got kids that are in school. He never gets to see them during the season. He will next week when they’re in Arizona, but that’s pretty far and in between when you’ve got little kids.”
If Longoria does call it a career after this season, it would be a very accomplished one. The career .266 hitter has 325 home runs, three All-Star appearances, a Rookie of the Year Award, a Silver Slugger Award and three Gold Gloves.
