The injury bug is starting to bite.

Safety Jimmie Ward’s Week 1 status is in doubt according to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who said Ward sustained a “pretty bad” hamstring injury in practice on Sunday.

George Odum, the former Colts safety whom San Francisco signed this offseason, is next up on the depth chart at free safety. Others who could slot in are Tarvarius Moore (who was burned badly for a touchdown in the preseason opener) and journeyman Dontae Johnson.

The list of players with hamstring issues just one week into the preseason is starting to get lengthy. Daniel Brunskill, Elijah Mitchell and Emmanuel Moseley are all dealing with similar injuries, though none sound as serious as Ward’s. As of now, he’s the only one of the group considered questionable for the regular season opener.

WR Danny Grey (hip), DL Drake Jackson (shoulder), LB Curtis Robinson (groin), OL Mike McGlinchey (knee), DL Hassan Ridgeway (quad) and Charvarius Ward (groin) are also on the injury report heading into the week, but all of their issues are considered minor.

The 49ers will cut their roster down to 85 players today, the first round of offseason cuts. Jimmy Garoppolo will not be on the list, as the 49ers would wait to cut him until Aug 30, before his contract becomes guaranteed if they cannot trade him.
