49ers to sit 16 players in final preseason game

The 49ers will face the Houston Texans on Thursday night for their final game of the preseason slate. It’s the third game in just 12 days, with 17 days on the other side of it before the season opener at Chicago.

So while the likes of Trey Lance and some other starters will play, with Kyle Shanahan aiming for a couple series, and no more than the first half, a host of players will sit.

Here’s the list of 16 players who won’t play, per Jennifer Lee Chan:

There’s three(ish) groups of players on that list. There’s healthy scratches, semi-healthy scratches (returning from injury) and injured players. Jimmy Garoppolo is, well, Jimmy Garoppolo.

Healthy scratches:

T Trent Williams

DE Nick Bosa

LB Fred Warner

LB Dre Greenlaw

LB Azeez Al-Shaair

Healthy-ish scratches:

DT Javon Kinlaw (team still being cautious with him as he ramps up after knee surgery)

DT Arik Armstead (returned to practice this week after suffering knee sprain on first day of camp)

CB Emmanuel Moseley (hamstring, returned to practice this week)

Injured:

T Mike McGlinchey (knee irritation)

RB Elijah Mitchell (hamstring)

CB Charvarius Ward (groin)

OL Daniel Brunskill (hamstring)

CB Ambry Thomas (knee)

S Jimmie Ward (hamstring)

S Dontae Johnson (rib)
