There’s been a lot of chatter this offseason about Trey Lance’s throwing mechanics and whether or not it’s something the 49ers are / should be concerned about. They are according to reports from the likes of Mike Silver, who said that Lance’s mechanics led to arm fatigue issues that plagued him throughout last season.

But what does the tape say? NFL Films’ Senior Producer Greg Cosell said that there is indeed a hitch in Lance’s delivery.

“I think there’s a little extra move in his delivery, and in this league fractions do matter,” Cosell said on KNBR Thursday morning. “Can that be cleaned up? I don’t know the answer to that to be honest with you. I’m not a quarterback coach in that sense. I don’t think it’s fatal by any means.”

Cosell is more interested in Lance’s ball placement than his motion. He pointed to that and Lance’s decision making with regards to running as two things to look at this season.

“The other things you’d be interested in seeing is he going to be precise with his ball location? Because this is an offense that does a really good job of finding the reads and the throws for the quarterback,” Cosell continued. “They do a really great job with that. So you have to be precisely accurate, because the throws are going to be there.”

“The other thing is, because he’s a very good runner, will he break down and leave the pocket too early? The term we then use ‘will he leave throws on the field that are there?’ Those are two things to look for early because Kyle Shanahan works pretty hard at putting their gameplan and offensive approach, and when throws are there to be made, they expect those throws to be made.”
