Ahead of their season opener with the Chicago Bears, the 49ers made a pair of roster moves, activating two players from the practice squad.

Per the team, the following players have been activated (standard elevation):

Pos.          Number               Name

S               31                         Tashaun Gipson Sr.

WR           17                         Malik Turner

If the 49ers had retained six wide receivers, Turner assuredly would have been the sixth.

The Illinois product has serious speed and is a relentless special teams player, who also impressed in a receiving role in camp. His activation indicates he may be relied upon in a special teams role, which could be a significant in a matchup with former 49ers special teams coach Richard Hightower, who’s now with the Bears.

Gipson Sr., meanwhile, faced the 49ers last year in Chicago as a member of the Bears.

The former Pro Bowl safety wasn’t given a 53-man roster spot but has discernibly impressed the team, and appears he will get a shot on Sunday.

It would not be a surprise if Gipson were to start on Sunday.

Starting safety Talanoa Hufanga told KNBR this week that, “being right next to [Gipson] in the box has definitely been a plus.”

SF kicks off against the Bears at 10 a.m. PT.
