Though announced at a strange time, the 49ers locked up one of their better defensive players for the near future on Sunday.

Dre Greenlaw confirmed to KNBR that he’s re-signed with the 49ers on what has been reported as a two-year contract extension. Greenlaw says that he inked the deal a few days ago.

“Having this done now, to still go out there and play as hard as we can and know that if I get hurt, oh well, you know what I mean?” Greenlaw said. “So I can go out there and lay it on the line and I’ve got that comfort behind me.

“It just shows how much they respect me. When they offered me a deal like that, you can’t turn that down. Especially with a great organization like the Niners. There’s not anywhere that I’d rather be. “

Greenlaw led the team with eight tackles in Sunday’s win over the Seahawks, after a tough opener in which he had a couple costly penalties.

Greenlaw was a hit since being drafted in the fifth round in 2019, making the Pro Football Writers all rookie team, and making one of the most iconic tackles in team history in Week 17 of that year.

Greenlaw missed most of the 2021 season after undergoing groin surgery, and was on the final year of his rookie deal. Since being drafted, Greenlaw has tallied 204 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions including one for a touchdown.
