The 49ers are down a QB, and Jimmy Garoppolo is notoriously injury prone.

On Tuesday, San Francisco worked out five quarterbacks in Kurt Benkert, Garrett Gilbert, Mike Glennon, Kevin Hogan and A.J. McCarron. They are likely looking to add one to their practice squad.

That’s not exactly a murderer’s row, but it’s to be expected in September when every QB of at least marginal value is on a roster. Glennon is the most experienced of the group, and has started 31 games throughout his career.

Glennon, 32, last played for the New York Giants, where he started four games in 2021, losing all four. Overall his career record is 6-25 with a 78.6 quarterback rating.

McCarron, 32, hasn’t started since 2019 and has only four career starts to his name. Gilbert, drafted by the Rams in 2014, has two career starts. Hogan has one.

For now, the 49ers will roll with Brock Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant in this year’s draft, as their backup. Purdy looked good enough in the preseason to warrant the team moving on from Nate Sudfield, but he has zero regular season experience.
