The 49ers returned to practice this week after a first win tainted by the loss of Trey Lance.

Kyle Shanahan confirmed Wednesday that Lance is done for the year — and that there’s no chance for him to return — but expects him back healthy for next season.

In his stead, the 49ers returned to the old standard of Jimmy Garoppolo as QB1 with some new faces behind him. Brock Purdy, as was originally intended before Garoppolo stuck around, is the backup, with former Packers quarterback Kurt Benkert added to the practice squad as the third. Here’s all three in action:

George Kittle was active on Wednesday in limited capacity, which bodes well for him making his season debut on Sunday.

The following are the non-participants from practice:

  • Daniel Brunskill (hamstring)
  • Arik Armstead (foot)
  • Ty Davis-Price (ankle)
  • Tyler Kroft (knee)
  • Trent Williams (rest)

The Armstead injury is new, but Shanahan didn’t seem too concerned. He said that he thinks he’ll be “alright” for Sunday. Brunskill’s lingering status is a concern, but the early, impressive play of the interior offensive line thus far renders that issue moot for the moment.
