There’s nothing like the sweet, sweet smell of semi-significant contract news on a Saturday morning.

Before the 49ers’ matchup with the Denver Broncos, they were towards the bottom of the pile in cap space, with a $3.71 million figure per OverTheCap, or $2.07 million per the NFLPA figure, which is updated daily.

Over the course of a season, that number shrinks due to practice squad activations, cuts and other moves.

So the 49ers gave themselves some breathing room, per Field Yates of ESPN. They converted $5.45 million of his base contract into a signing bonus to create $4.36 million in cap space.

This moves San Francisco to nearly $6.5 million in cap space using that NFLPA figure. That’s a lot of pesto!
