Brutal news. The 49ers feared the worst on Sunday when Emmanuel Moseley went down late in the fourth quarter after defending a pass near midfield.

Kyle Shanahan said the team was concerned Moseley had torn his ACL, pending an MRI. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the worst on Monday.

It’s awful news for a player who was a crucial piece of perhaps the best secondary the 49ers have had in the Shanahan era. PFF has Moseley ranked 35th among 173 corners in the NFL this season with a 70.9 grade.

Without Moseley, the 49ers will eventually turn to Jason Verrett, who is in his three-week return window after ACL surgery last season. But Kyle Shanahan indicated Verrett is not ready to start immediately.

The likes of Ambry Thomas, who played down the stretch last season, and Samuel Womack III, will likely compete for the job in the short term.
