Carlos Correa remains probably the only superstar position player available on the open market. The Giants are reportedly co-favorites to land him, but if they don’t, what’s next?

Probably free agent shortstop Dansby Swanson most-recently of the Atlanta Braves, who San Francisco has been discussing a contract with over the last week according to Jon Morosi.

Would Swanson be a good signing? That depends on how much he goes for.

If his number is anywhere in the galaxy of the $300 million deals doled out for other shortstops this offseason it would be a shock. Swanson is a nice player who is coming off an All-Star and Gold Glove season with the Braves. But that’s Swanson’s only All-Star season in seven years as a pro, and his career slash line of .255/.321/.417 isn’t all that head turning.

Spotrac lists Swanson’s market value at $148 million for six years. That seems somewhat reasonable for the 28-year-old, but would Farhan Zaidi do it? More likely, they would be looking at a shorter term deal, but in an offseason where desperation is growing, who knows.
