The 49ers continue to be one of the league’s best incubators for personnel executives and coaches.

Director of player personnel Ran Carthon will be the next general manger of the Tennessee Titans, according to ESPN. Because Carthon is a minority, San Francisco will receive two compensatory draft picks, a 2023 and 2024 third-rounder.

Amazingly, those are the sixth and seventh compensatory picks the 49ers have received since the league instituted Rooney Rule incentives for diversity hiring. San Francisco also received two picks for Robert Saleh and three for Mike McDaniel and Martin Mayhew.

During his tenure in San Francisco, Carthon served as the director of pro personnel for five seasons with the 49ers before being elevated to director of player personnel two seasons ago. The 49ers went to the Super Bowl and played in two NFC Championship Games over that span.

Carthon, 41, broke into NFL front offices as a scout with the Falcons in 2008 after playing in the league as a running back for a few years. Carthon then served as the Rams director of player personnel from 2012-16 before joining the 49ers.

In that role, Carthon was responsible for evaluating the top college prospects and assisting in the construction of the pro free agency board and evaluations according to the 49ers.

Carthon will replace Jon Robinson, who was fired by the Titans midseason despite being in charge of a team that made three consecutive playoff appearances before going 7-10 this year.
