Brock Purdy will undergo elbow surgery next week. While it is expected to be an internal brace surgery that would have him back in time for training camp, that’s not certain.

Purdy left the door open to the potential for a surgery that would combine the internal brace procedure with Tommy John surgery, for a timeline that might keep him out for the duration of the season.

While he’s the favorite to start if healthy, it’s unknown if he will be.

Put simply, there’s a lack of clarity with the 49ers’ quarterback room. NBC Sports Matt Maiocco joined KNBR on Friday and discussed how he sees the room.

While he didn’t think they would use a mid-round draft pick, he thinks it might “always be wise” to use a pick on a quarterback given what Purdy showed, and the glut of picks the 49ers have.

He doesn’t expect the addition of a pricey veteran.

“They’re not going to go out and get a quarterback where they have to give much guaranteed money to at all,” Maiocco said. “They’re not going to bring in a veteran guy that’s going to be competing for a starting job.”

Barring something crazy, it’s Purdy’s job to lose. Sadi Maiocco:

Right now with their timeframe, the timeframe that they’re working under, they believe that Brock Purdy will be ready well in advance of the start of the regular season. Their quarterback depth chart, unless something dramatic happens, will be Brock Purdy and Trey Lance in whichever order they decide.

If Brock Purdy’s healthy, you heard what George Kittle said last week and even Nick Bosa. I think the players expect it to be Brock Purdy, but if he’s not healthy, or with that opening, that Trey Lance is going to be given.

In other words, [Lance is] going to be taking most if not all of the offseason reps and and maybe even stretching into early training camp. If he shows dramatic improvement from where he was as far as accuracy and just reading the field and going through the progressions and anticipation and all that stuff, the onus is on him, I think, to prove that he’s the better guy than Purdy’s eight-game sample size to finish out the season was pretty darn good.
