49ers likely interested in two former Rams in free agency

It appears the Rams are in the midst of a partial fire sale, and that could provide an opportunity for the 49ers to swoop in and sign some quality players.

Two at the top of the list according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports are defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson and kicker Matt Gay.

Interest in Gay makes sense in light of Robbie Gould saying he’s not going to sign with the 49ers. Whether or not that’s actually true remains to be seen, but until the veteran is ready to negotiate, San Francisco has to explore other options. Gay is younger than Gould at just 28 years old and was a Pro Bowler in 2021. He was also solid in 2022, going 28-for-30 on field goals including a 58 yarder.

Robinson would provide San Francisco depth on the defensive line, where they currently have seven players hitting free agency. Robinson, 27, was once considered one of the best young interior lineman in the NFL, but wasn’t nearly as consistent as a member of the Rams. Under legendary defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, SF could get the most out of Robinson’s talent when is stock is currently low. Robinson would likely compete with Javon Kinlaw for the interior job next to Arik Armstead.

With their cap inflated and their roster flawed, the Rams have been looking to offload a bunch of players. They traded Jalen Ramsey on Sunday, and are currently looking to do the same with Bobby Wagner, who is still one of the best linebackers in the NFL. It looks like Los Angeles might get worse before they get better.
