The first surprise for the 49ers in free agency was a defensively player they acquired. The second is one they lost.

Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is headed to the Detroit Lions on a one-year deal worth just $6 million, according to Adam Schefter.

Moseley was assumed to be the No. 2 cornerback next to Charvarius Ward as he was last year before getting injured. The surprise isn’t necessarily that Moseley is gone, but that it’s for relatively cheap.

Without Moseley, the next man up is Ambry Thomas, with Samuel Womack III more likely to play the slot corner position. It would also stand to reason that cornerback will now be a position the 49ers will target in free agency and / or the draft.

Moseley is only 26 years old, but is coming off an ACL tear in October and has missed more games than he’s played the last two years. Moseley was a nice story for the 49ers, a player who joined the team as an undrafted player and worked his way up to a starting position in 2019.
