The 49ers lost a few players in their secondary in free agency, but are building that depth back up.

After reportedly signing former Falcons cornerback Isaiah Oliver, San Francisco reportedly added former Panthers safety Myles Hartsfield on a one-year deal according to Mike Garafolo. Hartsfield was a restricted free agent, but was not tendered a contract by Carolina.

Hartsfield, 25, played under new 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks last season with the Panthers. Hartsfield — like Jimmie Ward who is expected to sign with the Texans — can play multiple positions in the defensive backfield, but has the most experience at safety. He’s likely to slot in as a reserve option behind Talanoa Hufanga and Tashaun Gipson. Hartsfield was also an excellent special teams player in Carolina.

Hartsfield played college ball at Ole Miss and joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2020.
