It’s been an interesting offseason thus far for the 49ers. They have lost a host of key players, with the likes of Mike McGlinchey, Jimmie Ward, Azeez Al-Shaair, Samson Ebukam and many others departing.
At the same time, they made an enormous move for star defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, snatching him from the Eagles.
Should there be concern about the players who have departed, especially with some uncertainty, yet again at the quarterback position?
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports joined KNBR on Monday to break down the roster moves thus far.
He pointed to the fact that there are some ascending teams whose offseason moves are worth noting. Maiocco singled out the Detroit Lions, who are in a division which will likely not have Aaron Rodgers in it next season, and signed the likes of C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Emmanuel Moseley.
While the Philadelphia Eagles lost players like Gardner-Johnson and Hargrave, they still have much of their core intact and know Jalen Hurts will be at the helm.
The 49ers, meanwhile, don’t know exactly when or if Brock Purdy will be fully healthy, what Trey Lance is, or how Sam Darnold fits in.
Despite all that, and despite the departures, Maiocco struck an optimistic tone.
“For as many guys as the 49ers lost in free agency, they didn’t lose any superstars,” Maiocco said. “They lost some guys who got paid. They didn’t lose any superstars, but they added a superstar.
“I think of the comings and goings, the best player of the comings and goings for the 49ers this offseason is Javon Hargrave and he’s coming so that’s as a huge boost that defensive line, a defensive line that’s lost a lot of players but gained one really significant piece.”
The 49ers also have 11 draft picks in the upcoming NFL Draft after breaking the league record with seven compensatory draft picks. Maiocco suspects the team will look to add future starters and fill out much of their depth with that route, and believes they’ll use, rather than trade, the overwhelming majority of those selections.
