Florio: Cousins-to-49ers trade was ‘hot topic’ among NFL people at scouting combine

Old flings die hard.

Ever since Kyle Shanahan took the head coaching job with the 49ers, he’s been linked to interest in trading for Kirk Cousins, his signal caller when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator in Washington.

They were more than rumors. Shanahan is on the record as saying he was interested in trading for Cousins years ago, and was bummed when he couldn’t get it done.

Now, the 49ers have uncertainty at quarterback once again, and the Cousins-to-49ers rumors have come back to life. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported last week that many around the league were talking about a potential Cousins-to-49ers deal at the recent NFL scouting combine.

“Apparently, at the scouting combine there was some chatter, there was some noise, among people within the broader league structure, not the media, but people in the league about Cousins being traded to the 49ers,” Florio said on Pro Football Talk. “That was a hot topic at one point in Indianapolis.”

The scouting combine preceded San Francisco signing Sam Darnold, who will serve as the third quarterback in the room with both Trey Lance and Brock Purdy coming back from injury. That essentially put the Cousins rumors to rest.

Cousins is on a one-year deal worth a total of $35 million and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next season.
