The San Francisco Giants’ farm system took a blow on Tuesday evening, when 2019 first-round pick Hunter Bishop announced on Instagram that he had surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, and will miss the entire season.

Bishop’s Instagram account appears to have been deleted, but NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic reported on the news. Thought elbow surgery was expected, the Giants were hoping Bishop would not have to miss the entire season.

Since being drafted four years ago, Bishop, 24, has only been able to appear in 134 minor league games due to multiple injuries. Those issues have seen him fall out of most top 100 prospect lists. Bishop also missed all of 2020 due to COVID-19, and hasn’t been able to raise above High-A ball.

Bishop, a San Carlos native, was selected out of Arizona State and is seen as a utility outfielder who bats left-handed. Bishop was very durable as a three-year player for the Sun Devils, and just seems to have run into a string of bad luck.
