The Warriors may be set to lose their front office lynchpin.
According to a report from Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Bob Myers and the Warriors have not had substantive contract talks in months and the organization is “bracing” for him to leave when his contract expires in June.
Myers has other reported offers on the table outside of basketball and could pursue them. It begs questions as to whether Steve Kerr, with one more year remaining on his deal, could also leave.
Monte Poole joined T&C on Wednesday and discussed whether he thinks Kerr will stick around.
He said he’s asked the 57-year-old head coach about the prospect of leaving his post before.
“There have been a couple of occasions in the past couple of years where I’ve kind of pulled Steve to the side and asked him that in so many words,” Poole said. “He’s been pretty consistent in saying no, he wants to keep going. He wants to keep going.
“Physically, he’s a much better place than it was a few years ago, when he couldn’t even think about playing golf and now he can play golf. So physically, he’s in a better place.”
That could, of course, change.
Myers’ potential departure would affect Kerr in a significant way, Poole thinks. If he leaves, Kerr’s timeframe could shorten.
“Steve will not like that,” Poole said. “Neither will Stephen Curry. The veterans, they all want Bob back…
“I think if Bob leaves, Steve will consider maybe not sticking around for a lot longer — if Bob leaves. And if Bob stays, I think Steve would like to think okay, Bob is going to be here for a few more years. I’m good for a few more years. Steph’s good for a few more years. And I think he would ride that until the wheels fall off.”
Myers’ decision could have a major impact on a Warriors’ offseason that starts with figuring out how to retain Draymond Green. Green has a one-year, $27.59 million player option and has expressed his admiration for and close relationship with Myers throughout this season.
Signs are still murky at this stage, but a Myers departure could be a major first domino to fall.
