The Warriors may need a new general manager.
There have long been rumblings about the status of Bob Myers’ expiring contract; they have suggested he might leave the organization after this season. Those are now more than just rumblings.
According to Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Warriors haven’t had serious contract talks with Bob Myers in months. Per the report:
The Golden State Warriors and president of basketball operations Bob Myers have had no substantial contract extension talks in months and the sides are bracing for the likelihood that Myers could walk away from the franchise, league sources told The Athletic. His contract is up on June 30.
Both sides exchanged offers and counter-offers several months ago, and there has since been no traction on a new deal, league sources say. The Warriors have not yet presented an offer that has blown Myers away, but there’s also a growing sense that even a competitive market offer — near the top of the executive food chain — may not keep Myers with the franchise that he joined in April 2011 as an assistant general manager before his promotion to GM in April 2012.
Suggestions are that Myers might simply want a different challenge in his life. Connor Letourneau broke down that aspect here.
The report states the Myers has received “lucrative” offers from private equity funds and from other sports leagues, as well as media opportunities he may pursue. His official decision is expected in the next couple of weeks.
If Golden State does lose Myers, the most logical replacement is Mike Dunleavy Jr. He reportedly represented the Warriors at this week’s GM meetings in Chicago and has been tight with Myers since moving into the front office.
