During the second inning of the Brewers-Giants game on Friday night, shortstop Willy Adames sustained an unfortunate and bizarre injury.

While watching his team bat from the dugout rail, Adames was struck by a foul ball off the bat of Brian Anderson.

Anderson appeared to realize what happened immediately. He crouched by home plate and appeared distraught. Alex Wood, the Giants’ starter, appeared to mouth “did it hit him?” from the mound.

Play stopped for about three minutes. Eventually, Adames made his way down the dugout tunnel to the Brewers’ home training room.

The severity and details of Adames’ injury aren’t yet known. Brice Turang replaced him at shortstop for the next inning.

In Milwaukee’s first inning without Adames, they committed two errors, allowing the Giants to chase starter Freddy Peralta out of the game with a seven-run rally.

Adames, 27, is hitting .205 with nine home runs on the season. The six-year veteran hit a career-high 31 homer last year.
