Yaz’s splash hit walk-off completes wild comeback victory over Padres

Splash hit 102 was a memorable one.

The Giants followed up their sweep of the Dodgers in Los Angeles with another thriller on Monday back at home. A Mike Yastrzemski towering home run into the San Francisco Bay clinched a 7-4 extra innings walk-off victory over the San Diego Padres

Yaz’s three-run blast on a 3-1 fastball was the last swing of an improbable comeback after the Giants trailed in the ninth inning 4-2. Helped by a disastrous Luis Garcia appearance (two walks and a wild pitch that scored a run) Yastrzemski again played hero in the ninth, when he scored from third base on a sac fly from Patrick Bailey that wasn’t all that deep.

The Giants have now won eight in a row and are the hottest team in baseball. They lead both the Padres and Dodgers in the standings, and are 3.5 games out of first place in the NL West behind the Diamondbacks. If the playoffs began today, their 40-32 record would put them in the National League’s second wild-card spot.
