The Giants added two more coaches to their 2024 staff, filling out the group under Bob Melvin.
Bryan Price, a former manager with two decades of MLB coaching experience, will serve as pitching coach. Garvin Alston is set to be the club’s bullpen coach, a promotion from Triple-A Sacramento for him.
The Giants announced both hires on Tuesday morning. President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and Melvin are scheduled to meet with the media Tuesday afternoon, signaling these hires as ones that complete the coaching staff.
Price, a San Francisco native, managed the Reds from 2014 to 2018. From 2000 to 2021, he has either been a manager or Major League pitching coach. He served as a senior advisor to Melvin’s Major League staff in San Diego for the past two years.
Melvin and Price also overlapped in Seattle (2003-2004) and Arizona (2006-2009). Like most managers, Melvin has placed an emphasis on coaches whom he has familiarity with; Matt Williams and Ryan Christenson are also following Melvin from the Padres to the Giants.
Price is replacing Andrew Bailey, who is reportedly a candidate for the Yankees’ pitching coach job. It’s widely believed Bailey is pursuing jobs on the east coast so he can be closer to family.
Alston, meanwhile, has worked with the River Cats’ pitchers for the past four years. He has been a MLB bullpen coach for the Diamondbacks and A’s before, and also served as the Twins’ pitching coach in 2018. He has coached professionally for the past 18 years.
Craig Albernaz, who last held the role for the Giants, is joining Stephen Vogt’s coaching staff in Cleveland. In San Francisco, Albernaz had a wide swath of responsibilities as a bullpen coach, including instruction of the catchers and posting up in the dugout during games. Alston, under Melvin, will likely have more a more traditional role.
